Flow net

Flow net is a graphical representation of two-dimensional steady state ground water flow through aquifers. In a flow net, the strip between two adjacent flow lines is called a flow channel or flow tube. The drop in head between any two adjacent equipotential lines is the same and is called potential drop.

Construction of a flow net :-

•Obtained a map of the area on suitable scale.

•Mark the position of water table or any point of known head or pressure and any permeable boundaries.

•Flow lines are always parallel to an impermeable boundary and equipotential are always perpendicular to impermeable boundary.

•Equipotential are always parallel to a constant head boundary and flow lines are always perpendicular to a constant head boundary.

•In a homogenous isotropic system, flow lines and equipotential are always perpendicular and form curvilinear square.

•Identify and mark he places where water is entering the system and where it is leaving

•Draw flow lines and define all flow tubes.

•Draw equipotential based on the known position of water table or point of known head and make curvilinear squares.
