Zingg diagram is used for the classification of clastic sediment grain shapes (pebbles) based on three orthogonal axes : long (a), intermediate (b), and short (c).
Method :
Grain shape is defined by the ratios –
- b/a (intermediate / long axes)
- c/b (short / intermediate)

Shape Classes
- Equant (Spheroidal) : nearly equal axes
- Discoidal (Disc-shaped) : thin but wide
- Bladed : flat and elongated
- Rod-shaped : long and narrow
Uses :
- It determines transport and depositional history of clasts (eg. fluvial, glacial, beach environments etc.)
- A zingg diagram plots these ratios on an X-Y plot to visually classify particles.
