CHARACTERISTICS OF TILL DEPOSITS

  • Poor shorting. There is a large in-grain size, with large clasts upto boulder size frequently contained in a finer, sometimes clayey matrix
  • Lack of stratification, laminations and graded bedding (progressive change in grain size with depth) are generally absent except in deposits modified by meltwater which may exhibit stratification.
  • Mixture of lithologies. Particles may have been derived from widely separated sources, especially in the case of deposits laid down by large ice sheets.
  • Frequent presence of particles with abraded facets and striations
  • Preferred orientation of particles.
  • Compaction associated with pressures developed during deposition
  • Overlies striated rock or sediments basement
  • Predominantly subangular particles due to combination of fracturing and rounding by abrasion
